Sassaman takes pride in her tribute to Barbie and the story that she believes needs to be retold, but she couldn’t have done it without her crew members who never say no. Sassaman has for the doll and the person who bares the name, the “Barbie Penthouse” is far from a plastic playhouse. “If you stripped it down you’d see no Barbie, it’s masculine and sophisticated with splashes of pink, and sprinkled with just enough Barbie to pay honor and have a little fun,” says Ms. Sassaman gutted the entire home to start her laborious project from scratch, ensuring the home received the remodel it deserves. From tearing down walls to adding a bathroom and bedroom, Ms. Sassaman spent $3.5 million in renovations on the 3,500-square-foot condo. Located on the twenty-eighth floor of the Century Towers, Ms. Barbara Segal, the real-life name for the world’s most famous doll, inherited the luxury condo from her parents Ruth and Elliot Handler, the founders of the toy manufacturer Mattel Inc., and Barbie doll creators.
